I've been getting art books more frequently in the recent years! I don't have many, but I thought I'd show you all the ones I have.
This covers the physical art books I have, not the digital ones. Arranged in chronological order of acquisition:

Guild Wars: Nightfall expansion art book. This is my first art book, and the oldest one. Back in high school one of my friends was a big Guild Wars fan, and he gave me the book.

Disgaea 2 art book! I bought it at an anime store. It actually doesn't have much useful art xD it's mostly just backgrounds and character drawings, most of which can be found in-game.

World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich king art book, obtainable from the collector's edition. I tried to get the Cataclysm art book as well from eBay, but it was pricey. Contains a lot of blue pictures, due to the whole frozen wasteland theme thing.

The Halo art book. I went over this one in a previous journal entry. It's nice sci-fi material.

Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim art book. Obtainable through the collector's edition. I received it unexpectedly from a friend. It's as great as the game.

Bought this one online. It's pretty nice, has some nice info inside. It's actually a compilation of work shops published in Imagine FX magazine, so if you read those regularly, you've probably seen all the stuff in here.

Monster Hunter Illustrations book. My latest acquisition! I got it pretty cheap, and it's full of great stuff. The cover features gold foil stamping.

The movie is coming out in 3D later this month... ehhhhhh.... I have mixed feelings about it, but I'm curious how the ball room scene will look in 3D.

Thought I'd show some more stuff I've been doing at school:

A comic book I made for one of my classes. It's based on some environmental discussions we've been having. I used a western cartoony style for it (as well as the page & panel formats). It's not a style I use much at all, but the instructor is quite old, and I didn't want to alienate him with something manga-y. He's going to be marking it, after all.

Black & white due to time constraints.

I had to coil bind it due to more time constraints. It's supposed to be saddle stitched >____>

Photo of some more draft pages for another comic for illustration class. I handed it in digitally, so I didn't really need to physically print and bind it. I showed some other pages on my twitter somewhere I think.
Actually I made some changes to the panels after this photo was taken and after I had gotten more feedback. It's using my characters from my previous assignment.

Hmm I'll post the color images of those two at a later date. Not much to show visually... most of the stuff I do isn't traditionally illustrative. Publication design, boring papers, installation and interaction designs and all that stuff.

Skyrim Adventures 1-4

I've been playing Skyrim this weekend~~!! I've been playing as a Khajiit thief/assassin (but mostly just a thief (subject to change once I join the dark brotherhood)). A lot of fun things have been happening, so I decided to make some comics about my experiences :P

Oh and I found The Lusty Argronian Maid v2 near Whiterun. It was quite the lulz. You may remember the first volume if you played Morrowind or Oblivion. I was like LOL when I found it by a bed.

This is my character. I got into a fight with some bandits before taking the screenshot, so there's a few arrows sticking out of his body... they actually shot right into the left eye. Very precise.
I named him Sade, just like my original character Sade the lynx, because this skyrim character was made to look like a lynx... but for the comics I'm going to just refer to him as Hero.

Ohhhman I'm busy lately. Today was the deadline for 5 images for my illustration class, and due to 2 other deadlines being on the same day, I didn't finish my 5 images. But I tried to push with quality so I didn't get into trouble.

The 2 characters I made for the assignment:

Concept sketches~

Originally had an armored knight character, but redesigned it to be less plate-armor based. I did human drawings for my last assignment, so I went with a fantasy theme this time, which is why I added the werewolf.

It's 4 images and a cover. For my 4 images I'm going with morning, afternoon, sunset, and evening scenes.

The cover that I completed a few days back. The colors did not come out properly during the printing process. Auugh.

Morning and afternoon scene roughs / wips. The morning scene at the top is sorta done and was shown at the presentation, but I have more time so I want to work on it more. I had to skip a lot of the details to cut down on the time.

Nice tool for students, if you don't know about it already. My instructor was trying to get the class to use it for a paper, but I just used physical books as my sources, so I didn't really use zotero. It seems like a useful tool, though. It needs firefox I think.

So there's this thing called Inkling coming out from Wacom mid September. It records your pencil strokes into digital form. It's basically those pens you can get that digitally records what you write into itself, and then you can transfer that to a computer, except this is made for drawing.

The video explains it:

Not sure how good the pencil to digital translation is (or how you erase), but I guess we'll see when it's released. I don't draw on real paper that much, but still it's good to see some new innovations coming out.

Cladun x2 finally got released in America. It's a game for your PSP, available only in digital format over at PlayStation Network Store. It allows even more character customization than its predecessor!

So of course, I've been making all my characters in the game, harharharhar.

Complete with floppy ears and moving swishy tail! It looks pretty good in motion.

Probably the most memorable song for me from the game Enslaved: Odyssey to the West. Beat the game quite a while ago, but I still remember this song, especially since it was played in the odd ending of the game. It's really too bad the game wasn't commercially successful enough to warrant a sequel. I admit the game play did get a bit repetitive, and the final boss wasn't that spectacular, but the screenplay, character animation & acting, and story were good and interesting.

I totally want a music box that plays that song.

I've been experimenting with coloring methods. I didn't bother doing a clean line layer like I did for my tree stump picture on this one, I took the rough sketch and colored directly from that. Used more different brushes this time, too. That round thing was originally a lit searchlight, but I turned it off xD

Mannn I haven't been drawing Pataki at all. He's a heavy surveillance conspiracist, but he can act totally normal. He's friends with Sade & Matagot (and are often involved in their more elaborate pranks thanks to his resources).

I was struggling with the lighting early into this pic... it was all dark blue with the bright cyan and it looked totally bleh.

Color practice illustration for today! Been working on a comic lately (I wanna post it all at once here when it's done), so I took a break with some color work. I've been doing a lot of stuff in SAI lately so I wanted to color in photoshop again.

This is the drawing I did in SAI before taking it to photoshop to color. The tree stump was originally a rock, but I felt a tree stump would look more natural.

My book Metonymy 1/2 is now retired and out of print. It's pretty outdated now, and I think the people who wanted to buy it have all bought one by now. I don't have personal copies for private sales if anyone wants it in the future, sorry.

It was a small personal experiment / project, and while the sales weren't anything to brag about (I sold less than 100, if you were wondering xD ), it was a fun project. Thank you again to everyone who supported it.

I definitely want to try something bigger next time, especially since I have a lot more characters now. ;)

I don't really collect many figures, but OHMYGOD that thing looks awesome. AND IT TRANSFORMS.

I would totally get it if it wasn't freakin $200. The price seems sorta justified from how awesome it is, but $200 for a figure, eck. The most I've spent was $100 for my big Alphonse figure :P

I'm really curious how that thing transforms into horse mode, though. It probably takes 30minutes to do it...

I've been fiddling with Basil's cafe floor plans. This is what I think I'll settle on... though it seems a bit big. It's supposed to be a small quaint place, but I also need the place to have a small bar section for story purposes. Basil also likes making alcoholic drinks, so that's another reason.

Employee wise it's just going to be Basil and one waiter (and maybe two if it's busy), which is why I think the place seems too big. I kept the kitchen outside rather than a separate room, because I need Basil to be visible and not hidden in the kitchen.

I really need to organize my drawings and contents.
When I get new viewers, they're often confused with who my characters are and what they're doing. It doesn't help that none of the drawings and comics I have done are organized or strung together properly. I just draw them and post them at various places. Long-time viewers may know what's going on, but I think it's confusing to new visitors.

I should first organize my characters... and then my comics... and then make the future comics a lot more manageable. >____<;;

I'm busy with commissions at the moment, but I'll definitely have to properly organize them all on this blog later.

Redesigns for my tier 1 dragon characters.

These designs are modifications of the current ones, and are not meant to replace them. They will exist together, as sort of a 'combat-mode' form. Call it my cop-out to do shonen battle scenes o3o

Made these designs to look like they're sort of 'wearing' them like masks and gloves. Took the existing designs and exaggerated them. Also, big hands.

More pictures later~ also got a short comic planned to test these out :D also gotta do a proper picture of Raux since he's in the shadows up there :P

I do like that the two versions feel completely different. Leona's is a lot slower, sober & sad(?) ballad, while the original is an upbeat summer song. That's really the point of having songs covered by different artists, isn't it? If it was to sound and feel just like the original, what's the point of a cover? :P

Working on a long comic strip of my tier 1 and 2 characters. Will be the first time my tier 2 guys get dialogue!
It's gonna be pretty long (vertically), and in color!

Despite all my characters, Basil is the only canine.

After I get this comic done, I think I'll update some images on this blog (especially the top header image) and finally finish my remaining commissions.

Saw this and it's pretty freaky. What's amazing is that the dog head still functions. It's actually a part of an old historical documentary.

Part 2 video has another dog, which doesn't get decapitated, but is killed and then brought back to life.

Takoyaki attempt! It was really hard to make... I actually used a small fork to turn them because we didn't have a takoyaki flipper. Didn't have takoyaki sauces either so we just used mayonnaise (I used hotsauce).

I actually did have takoyaki once, but it was very long ago during a Chinese New Year festival. I really don't remember the taste, but I do remember the texture being very soft and mushy on the inside.
When I go traveling to Japan I'll try it again! :D

Original first movie

Working no a Mewtwo picture because I'm in a phase, but I was reading up on the first movie and found out that originally, the first pokemon movie was supposed to be the finale for the series (like FMA: Conqueror of Shamballa), but that got scrapped because Pokemon was so popular and they needed to continue the story (thus the total cop-out ending of Mewtwo just erasing everyone's memories like none of the events in the movie happened. that is so cheating).

How great would it have been if they went through with that original plan, and if they wanted to continue the series, just make new protagonists for the Orange Islands season and beyond. I know kids are more attached to the original protagonists, but Ash has been 10years old for like 15 years now, it's getting a bit ridiculous.

Alani is a new addition. He's the resulting parrot character from my school work a while back. Parrots have such pretty tropical colors~

Pataki is so hard to draw. I think I've drawn him about 3 times since his conception. I'm still getting used to drawing beaked characters, and with the addition of Alani, hopefully I'll get better at it soon.

Ash & friends are totally useless, so Mewtwo decides to use his remaining power to break himself free.

Ash helps Mewtwo to the spring. Yes, this is the only thing Ash does of any significance in this whole movie.

Ash just TOSSES injured Mewtwo into the water. It's not like he'll drown or anything amirite?

Mewtwo is slowly drowning. Oh hey, Mew makes an appearance! Mew wasn't available for a full role in this movie. He/she was too busy filming another movie with Lucario.

Hmm.. doesn't this seem familiar? Feels like this happened before...

Oh, that's right.

Giovanni appears!

Mewtwo is pissed and ready to kick some ass and take names.

CLEARLY THIS IS WHEN HE FINALLY KILLS GIOVANNI AMIRITE

Well, there goes Ash.

Oh they're all alive. They all wake up to find all the water missing.

Ash is all right. Yay. Mewtwo actually moved the spring underground to hide it from people.
Mewtwo says he's going to wipe the memories from everyone about all this again.

But Meowth makes a speech to convince Mewtwo to let them keep their memories.

Mewtwo agrees to let Ash & friends keep theirs, and only wipes the memories of the villains.

These two had even less to do with the story than Ash.

The bad guys lose their memories, and the clones all go their separate ways to live their lives.

If Mewtwo had that power all along, why didn't he just do that at the start?

The next day, we see Bus driver lady, Researcher lady, and Water guy having a final conversation.

Not sure if those two lost their memories too, but they decided to get together.

Colorless crowd people!

And Mewtwo becomes Batman.

Well, that's Mewtwo Returns.

Yes, Ash & his friends were completely detached from the movie's main story until the very last end, and even then their involvement was minimal. In the end Mewtwo ends up freeing himself out of the machines, and Ash's only purpose of helping Mewtwo to the spring could have easily been fulfilled by any of the other clone pokemon. You could take Ash & his friends out of this movie and lose next to NOTHING.

Also, this is a personal issue but I could not listen to Mewtwo seriously xD

I keep thinking about Yami Yugi and Dan Green, and kept expecting Mewtwo to yell ACTIVATE TRAP CARD every time I saw him.

Hmm I hope they do something with Mewtwo again. Maybe a Mewtwo vs. Genesect movie...

So the clone pokemon get split into 2 groups. Mewtwo's group doesn't want to fight, while clone-Pikachu's group goes out to fight team rocket.

Mewtwo can't decide whether their safety or freedom is more important. So he just does nothing.

Ash & friends arrive at Mewtwo's island hideout. Have you noticed that Ash & friends are COMPLETELY DETACHED from the whole plot? They don't remember Mewtwo, they haven't even ran into the clones, and the only reason they're there is to save Pikachu from Team Rocket. THEY HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THE MEWTWO vs TEAM ROCKET CONFLICT HAPPENING RIGHT OUTSIDE.

Oh look, baby pokem- OHMYGOD WHAT IS THAT THING

No. Nononono that is not a baby Nidoqueen.
Baby Nidoqueen look like this:

NOT THAT:

Team Rocket attacks the clones who went out to fight.
Gyarados could hyperbeam the copter, Blastoise could hydropump it, Dewgong icebeam it, Ninetails fire blast it, but no, that would make too much sense.

The clones get captured in Rocket Pokeballs.

Oh, look who finally decided to do something.

Mewtwo frees the clones from their balls.

Dramatic reunion!

Mewtwo you have a clear shot at him JUST KILL HIM LIKE YOU KILLED THOSE SCIENTISTS IN THE FIRST MOVIE AND EVERYTHING WILL BE ALRIGHT.

Giovanni deploys all TWO of his robot army. Seriously Mewtwo, just attack Giovanni. Do it.

Mewtwo beats the robots pretty easily.

With his robots defeated, Giovanni suggests they move to another island, and MEWTWO AGREES.
Mewtwo is a totally gullible pushover in this movie.

Ash & friends get captured by Team Rocket. They have still yet to contribute anything to the main conflict.

Mewtwo, the clones, and Giovanni arrive at the other island where Ash is.

Giovanni loves making himself an easy target. JUST ATTACK HIM MEWTWO, HE'S ASKING FOR IT.

AHHHHG that baby Nidoqueen bugs me to no end. It's like looking at a baby-grandma.

Giovanni threatens to use the cloned pokemon for experiments unless Mewtwo does what he says and goes inside that blue ball thing. Hmm, attack the unguarded leader, or do what he says and walk into a trap. HMM HMM WHAT TO DO.

Apparently that blue ball thing is made to harness his abilities and bend Mewtwo to Giovanni's whims.

"If only I had psychic powers that could have prevented all this!!!"

Mewtwo = Pokemon Jesus

Ash & friends, and the captured cloned pokemon are being taken to the dungeon. The Pikachu's are injured! What to do!

Researcher lady and Water guy use a vial of the spring's water to heal the pikachu's.

The water from the spring heals injured pokemon? I wonder if this will come back later in the plot.
Note that all their hands are totally free, and nothing is preventing them from sending out their pokemon to fight the team rocket guards and free themselves.

Ahmahgah... just look at that. They could SO easily break out of there. That Blastoise alone could do it.

Giovanni talking about Mewtw.. AHHG I DID NOT NEED TO SEE HIM FROM THAT ANGLE.

He breaks the device in his fists. I think Giovanni just likes breaking stuff in his hand. It's not like it hurts him or anything.

Team Rocket is on cleaning duty.

Team Rocket is building a laboratory at the island. They start polluting the place, which pisses off the locals.

Ash & the clones get freed by all the explosions.

Ash & Co FINALLY meet Mewtwo for the first time since their memory wipe from the last movie.

We hear a knock on the door and see two more characters entering the movie.

"We heard you let in complete strangers you've never met before into your home, so we thought we'd drop by."

Seriously, she has never met those two people. She's all like COME IN AND SLEEP OVER.

COLLECTIVE GASP

Dramatic entrance.

Pikachu is captured. What a tweest.
Also that whip/rope is electric-proof.

ASH SEND OUT BULBASAUR AND CHIKORITA AND VINEWHIP THEM OR SOMETHING, DON'T JUST STAND THERE

Team Rocket gets away with Pikachu. It's almost as if Ash just stood there doing noth-- oh wait.

Wobbuffet makes his one-time appearance.

Ash +friends & researcher lady hike up the mountain to follow Team Rocket.

We cut to Giovanni's face. Am I the only one who thinks he looks really goofy? I mean he's supposed to be the biggest villain in the early days of Pokemon, but his face... and those bright naruto-orange clothes... he looks more like a pimp than a crime leader.

Also, this scene:

No, you can't do that. Apparently Giovanni's hands are made of bloodless steel.

Oh, and the blonde girl was actually working for Giovanni. Surprise.

Team Rocket crashlands on Mewtwo's island where Pikachu meets clone-Pikachu. Since Mewtwo erased memories in the last movie, the original Pikachu doesn't remember the clone, but the clone remembers.

Meowth fulfilling his primary purpose in nearly all the movies: translating poke-talk.

See, when Meowth does the translating, it works because he's actually translating it for Jessie and James, and the audience hears from that. When Mewtwo does it, he really has no reason to be repeating what other pokemon say, other than for the sake of translating for the audience.

Clone-pikachu is all ready to kick Pikachu's adorable yellow behind when Mewtwo intervenes.

Clone-Pikachu is all mad because Pikachu gets to live around the world and go wherever he wants while he and the other clones have to live in secret.

Prepare for trouble.

And make it double.

Ash & Friends fell into the water when Team Rocket's balloon crashed. They arrived at the shore of one of the lake's islands.

Ash is sad because Pikachu is gone. Well maybe you should have done something when you had the chance, Ash.

Oh I haven't given this guy a name yet, have I? Let's call him the Water Guy. He researches water.
Anyways water guy says that the meowth balloon crashed at that island over there.

Researcher lady suggests making a canoe out of a fallen tree.

Mewtwo plans on taking the clones and leaving the place without fighting the humans, and look for a different place to live in peace.

However, clone-Pikachu wants to fight Team Rocket, and to leave the lake and go wherever they want, instead of living in hiding.

The clones lock up Team Rocket, except for Meowth because he's a pokemon and he can speak english. Eeeee look at Meowth!

Mewtwo Returns Review part1

I watched Mewtwo Returns for the first time ever. I had a weird sad dream about Mewtwo the other night and thought about turning it into a short comic. So I decided that I should familiarize myself with the character.
I watched the english dub, where Dan Green uses his Yami Yugi voice as english Mewtwo.

It was... very bland. I mean I like Mewtwo, but the whole thing was.. so bland. I thought of summarizing the experience, but I thought it'd be more fun to do my very own (and very first) commentary/review, with SCREENCAPS 8D

So we begin with Mewtwo recapping the events of the last movie.

Starting the movie with a monitor scene. Doesn't this feel familiar?

Gee I wonder who that could be.

Apparently there's a big lake on the top of the biggest mountain in the Johto region.

And that's where Mewtwo and the cloned pokemon from the last movie now live.
Mewtwo is voiced by Dan Green in this sequel. In the first movie, Mewtwo was voiced by Phillip Bartlett.

"Believe in the heart of the cards, Ash..."

Just look at that spectacular low-budget title screen. It's dub-licious.

We start the movie with our trio walking forward with no clear destination.

To be fair, if I were a never-aging 10year old with an unexplainable source of secure financial income, I'd probably spend all my life walking around nonchalantly, too.

And oh look, they just HAPPEN to run into the very mountain where Mewtwo is at. Naturally.
Incredible coincidence or lazy writing? You decide.

So they have to go around the mountain for some reason (really, do they even need a reason?), and the fastest way is by the bus that comes around once a month, and the next one is that afternoon.

Gotta catch the bus!

Team Rocket makes their appearance! They will be the primary source of comic relief throughout this hour-long adventure.

I freakin LOVE Team Rocket's Meowth. Look! He has a rocket note book! :D eeeeee!

Here we see some of the movie's support characters. I don't even remember their names. They are completely flat and forgettable. Let's just call them Bus Driver Lady and the Researcher Lady (the one in the pink).

Fail.

They miss the bus.

But they're in luck, because the researcher lady is totally cool with letting three random strangers she just met off the street into her home where she lives alone.

"I let random people into my homes all the time, it's cool."


Obligatory Brock moment.

Meanwhile, we see that the bus Ash and his friends missed is being LIFTED AND SPUN AROUND IN MIDAIR BY WIND.

"If only we lived in a world where we had magical beasts we could call out to help us in these situations!"

But it's all good, because Mewtwo saves them through his HD Samsung widescreen.

It's a pretty big step down from that island castle you built in the last movie, but whatev's.

And here we run into the first big issue in the movie. The other pokemon around Mewtwo can't speak human language, so whenever Mewtwo is talking to his two primary comrades (clone-pikachu and clone-meowth), he has to keep reiterating what they said so that the audience understands what they said, before making his own response.
This constant self-talking not only feels awkward, it keeps going on and on throughout the film until Rocket Meowth enters the main plot, where Meowth takes over the translations. This could all have been easily fixed by just adding subtitles to the pokemons' speech (like they did in those few TV episodes in season 1), but maybe kids don't like to read and watch at the same time.

So Ash & friends borrow a canoe from the researcher lady to go around the mountain, but Misty gets freaked out by the bugs, so they return to the researcher's home.

Just buy a max repel, Misty. It's only 700.

Brock suggests they go over the mountain.


"I can sense the plot up there on the mountain!"

Cut to a scene with Mewtwo constantly repeating what Pikachu and Meowth says to him.
Remember all that rage, vengeance, and violence Mewtwo had in the first movie? That's all been replaced with teen angst in this sequel.

Around this point in the movie, you'll start to realize that a lot of the music is recycled from the first movie.

Process wise, when someone commissions me for stuff like this, I get a picture description and character references. For this one, Mr. Tsarin let me come up with the costumes, so I made some concepts and sent them to him:

I used a very slight Persian motif for the costumes. I kept the 2nd costume a bit consistent with his previous commission costumes from the provided character references.
Then I sent a thumb sketch of the scene and developed from there.

Heys~ I'm still working on pages for the Metonymy 1/2 book. I don't want to be too ambitious with my first book project, but I do want it to be at least a bit worth the money and waiting time for whoever buys it, especially since what all the comic amounts to is my characters being silly in 4 panel formats without any actual plot.
